Urgent care for warm weather infirmities

Urgent Care in Germantown, MD
Just as common as sunburn

If you were asked to name the most common warm weather infirmity that is treated at urgent care clinics, chances are that sunburn would be the overwhelming answer. However, there are two or three other health problems that are just as common, and usually are more serious.

Without fail, every year we expose ourselves to more germs, push our bodies a little harder, and partake in activities that may result in mishaps that leave us in pain. Urgent Care Centers can get you back in the summer fun as fast as possible, but remember the old adage, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” You are definitely better off avoiding these common summertime illnesses and injuries in the first place.

Urgent care when your child cannot wait until tomorrow

Urgent Care in Germantown, MD
Illness and injuries that need immediate attention

Urgent care centers are perfectly set up to handle injuries that crop up after hours and that are not life threatening, but needs attention quickly. For example:

Your child has not been feeling well all afternoon. It is a weekday evening and you were hoping that he or she would make it until tomorrow so you could get in to see the pediatrician. However, by 9pm, your child only seems to be getting worse.

You decide that it is just too uncomfortable to wait until tomorrow to see a doctor. The question before you is, “Should you take your child to an urgent care clinic, or to the emergency room?” Consider the following suggestions that may help you decide what to do if you find yourself in a similar situation.

Situations for urgent care

If someone has an injury or illness that is not life-threatening, but needs attention quickly, and your doctor’s office is closed; an urgent care center is the most likely the place to go. Medically speaking, going to an urgent care clinic is similar to your physician’s office, but with a few added services. Here are some of the most common childhood conditions that are treated at an urgent care clinic:

  • simple lacerations and wounds
  • fractures, sprains, and strains
  • ear, nose, and throat problems
  • fevers, and common pediatric illnesses
  • stomach flu
  • diarrhea
  • vomiting
  • rashes and infections
  • Minor burns

Sports physicals in Germantown, MD

Sports physicals in Germantown, MD
Spring sports and camp physicals

It’s time for spring sports and you might have a middle school or high school athlete who needs to complete the Pre-Participation Physical in order to participate. If your primary care physician is overbooked, or you cannot schedule a timely appointment, bring your child into your local Urgent Care Center for the required sports physical. Most of us look at this as a mere formality, a minor hurdle that must be made when your child only wants to play ball or go to camp. Without sounding overly dramatic, the reality is that a sports physical for your child might save her or his life.

The purpose of pre participation physicals

The approach is to rule out or evaluate any medical conditions, or provide treatment before your child competes or participates. Some of the health risks that are screened may include:

  • Orthopedic problems
  • Asthma or pulmonary dysfunction
  • Undiagnosed heart conditions
  • Spinal anomalies
  • Lesser issues that still cause concern

Convenient and comprehensive sports physicals in Germantown

We all want the best for our families, especially when it comes to healthcare and preventive medicine. If you cannot get a timely appointment for a sports physical exam through your primary care physician, Medical Access provides convenient walk-in service for every member of your family. Their friendly staff will carefully and quickly assess your needs, and provide the appropriate services. Care will range from preventive medicine to urgent care, even if it requires x-ray and lab services. Plan ahead and get the youngsters in for summer camp physicals at the same time.

Tips to avoid injury treatment for sunburn

Injury treatment in Germantown, MD
Too much fun in the sun

As the weather warms up, it is inevitable that we will be providing injury treatment for patients who have either spent too much time in the sun or did not take steps to protect their skin. The Skin Cancer Foundation reminds us that sunscreen should always be used and applied liberally. Consider the following tips for sunscreen use below:

1.       If you cannot apply sunscreen all the time, be sure to use it when the sun’s rays and heat is most intense; from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunscreen need to be applied about 30 minutes before going out during this time of day:
  1. It is important to cover all of your skin that will be exposed to the sun. This includes the back of your knees, on the ears, around your eyes, your neck, and scalp.
  2. Select only sunscreens with a sun-protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. Check the label to ensure that it is what is known as “broad spectrum” SPF. This means that it will block both UVA and UVB sunlight. UVA rays are responsible for sunburn. UVB rays are largely responsible for causing wrinkles.
  3. Don’t skimp when it comes to the use of sunscreen. Shake it well before applying, and then lather it on.
  4. Infants need sun screen too. We suggest that you start using sunscreen for your children as early as 6 months of age.
  5. It is important to remember that insect repellent can reduce a sunscreen’s SPF by as much as 30 percent. If you are using insect repellent along with sunscreen, use a higher SPF, and reapply it fairly often.

Urgent care for a knee injury: what to expect

Urgent Care in Germantown, MD
Get checked to avoid complications

If you have suffered a recent knee injury, it is important to get urgent or immediate care to avoid serious complications. Knee injuries are not just for professional or college athletes, there are many different ways to injure a knee such as falls, twisting injuries, car accidents, and work place repetitive use. Your most important consideration is to make sure that you have not suffered a fracture. If you have any concern that there is a fracture, you should go to an Emergency Room or an Urgent Care Center for an x-ray.

Treatment at an urgent care center

If you feel the need to go an Emergency Room after a knee injury, you can expect the following:

1.       Examination – You will be examined by a doctor or health care provider. He or she will determine if there are any urgent conditions that require further testing, treatment or admission to a hospital.

2.       X-Ray – You will most likely have an X-ray to rule out the possibility of a fracture. If you do have a fracture, the urgent care physician will determine if you can go home, or if you need to be referred to an orthopedic surgeon. After leaving the urgent care clinic, your primary care doctor or orthopedic surgeon will examine you and determine if an MRI is necessary.

3.       Discharge Home – In most cases, patients are able to return home without the need to be admitted to the hospital. After a knee injury, it is very common for the urgent care doctor to send you home with a knee immobilizer that prevents you from bending the knee until you are seen by your primary care doctor or orthopedic surgeon.

Urgent care and treatment for fevers in infants

Urgent Care
Urgent care for fevers

It almost seems that urgent care clinics are designed with fever treatment in mind. Few things can upset parents more than a baby or toddler presenting with a fever. Believe it or not, a fever can be a sign that good and bad things are happening in the body at the same time. A fever is almost always a symptom of something, not its own illness. When a fever develops, a quick trip to your Germantown urgent care clinic will learn the cause, and how you should treat it. There are many reasons that patients come down with a fever, and the reasons can range in severity. On the serious side of the scale; arthritis, heat exhaustion, and infection can cause fevers. Less serious fevers can be caused by sunburn or certain medications. Do not panic if your child has a fever. In many cases, it will go away and you will be no worse for wear.

Fever in infants

Infants have difficulty regulating body temperature. When an infant has a fever, do not wait to seek care. A rectal thermometer is the most accurate way to take your infant’s temperature. If your baby has a rectal temperature of 100.4° or higher, you should see a medical professional.

Diagnostic testing for high blood sugar

Diagnostic testing
The seriousness of diabetes

Did you realize that the best urgent care centers in Germantown are working on the front lines in the battle against diabetes? According to the Center for Disease control, diabetes affects more than 29 million people in the United States. That is an astounding 10 percent of the population. Diabetes is the medical term for metabolic diseases which causes individuals to have high blood sugar levels over a prolonged period. If an individual’s blood sugar levels are high over a long enough time period, it will have serious effects on many parts of the body. Diabetes is associated with such complications as heart disease, stroke, loss of vision, circulation problems, and kidney failure.

The American Diabetes Association has designed a self assessment test to determine your potential risk factors for pre-diabetes. The top urgent care centers in Germantown also can provide confidential diagnostic testing by simply walking in; not appointment necessary. The doctors at the urgent care clinic can offer preventative tips and encourage those at high risk to speak with their primary care physician.
