A walk in clinic makes sense

Walk in clinic in Germantown, MD
When you need immediate care

Walk in clinics have become an essential part of the health care system. There are several great reasons for patients to choose an urgent care center or a walk in clinic when they need treatment for immediate and non-life-threatening illness. If you develop an acute problem before your scheduled visit, you cannot afford to wait; you need immediate care.

Walk in clinics make sense
  • If you go to an emergency room with non-life-threatening health issues, you can expect to pay much more because of the high expense of facilities designed to treat life-threatening traumas.
  • When you arrive with an urgent complaint, you will not be seen until the sicker patients have been treated.
  • This is the primary cause for so many long waits in emergency rooms.
  • Walk in clinics are efficiently streamlined by a system that eliminates complexity or bureaucracy.
  • The practitioners understand that for many patients, life is already busy, complicated, and stressful.
  • Urgent care clinics work hard to make healthcare simple and accessible. This is why you can simply walk in at your convenience.

Walk in clinic tips to avoid hypertension

Walk in clinic in Germantown, MD
Walk in service for blood pressure screening

Walk in clinics are the perfect solution for blood pressure screening and counseling. This service screens patients who may be at risk for hypertension (high blood pressure) and other heart conditions. You do not need an appointment. Based upon the results, you will receive counseling on your risk factors, and recommendations for lifestyle changes to help you lead a healthier life. If it is determined that you have an elevated blood pressure, it can be monitored and managed at the walk in clinic, or you may be referred to your primary care provider for further care.

Diet can reduce or avoid hypertension

Dietitians, exercise physiologists, and physicians all pretty much agree that diet and lifestyle can help you control or avoid all the adverse effects associated with hypertension. Consider the following:

  • Eat at least 5 servings of vegetables and 4 servings of fruits daily
  • Cut back on calorie-dense foods
  • Monitor and reduce sodium intake
  • Limit your alcohol intake
  • Integrate some form of daily exercise in your lifestyle
  • Include foods that contain calcium, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin D in your diet

Walk in clinic flu shots are essential

Walk in clinic in Germantown, MD
Think of the most vulnerable

Most everyone knows that the walk in clinic is convenient to drop in, get a flu shot, and be on your way. It almost seems like a casual event. However, that is the perspective of someone who is healthy. We have come to think of flu shots as something to make us more comfortable, instead of focusing on the essential life-saving solution it is. Flu shots saves lives for two reasons:
  • Flu shots protect the most vulnerable members of the population, those from aged 6 months to 8 years of age, people aged 65 and older, and those with compromised immune systems and health conditions that can become life threatening if they have the flu.
  • Flu shots help reasonably healthy people from contracting the flu and passing it on to those who are most vulnerable.

Exactly who is at risk?

The flu spreads easily; and can sweep through schools, nursing homes, businesses, or even towns. When an infected person coughs, droplets get into the air and anyone who breathes those droplets will be exposed. Hands that are contaminated with the viruses can also spread the flu virus. Flu epidemics can seriously affect all populations, but those who have the highest risk of complications are:
  • Children younger than age 2 years
  • Adults aged 65 years or older
  • Pregnant women or women who are less than two weeks post-partum
  • People with diabetes or chronic diseases of the heart, lungs, kidneys, and liver
  • HIV patients or anyone with compromised immune systems
  • Health care workers

Walk in clinic therapies for chronic back pain

Walk in clinic in Germantown, MD

If your primary care physician is relatively busy, it could be some time before you get an appointment. This is when you should consider a walk in clinic to get immediate attention for your problem. We understand that even the mildest back pain is discomfort that can keep you from focusing on your daily tasks. We want to offer some tips to help you deal with back pain, or at least get you some relief until you can get to a health care professional. Consider the following tips:
  1. Ice and heat
  2. Therapeutic massage

Walk in care for chronic conditions

Urgent Care in Germantown, MD
When you need urgent care

It is well documented that urgent care clinics are a growing trend in the medical industry. Walk in clinics are not simply “first aid stations.” They offer ancillary services such as imaging and lab services that your doctor would send you out for to begin with. We all can remember going in to a doctor’s office for a medical problem, and then being sent to another facility for lab work and/or x-rays. It is interesting to note that older patients, who have developed a life-long tradition and comfort in visits to their regular doctors, are increasingly in favor of walk in clinic services. We want to offer some very valid reasons why more Baby Boomers may find urgent care and walk in clinics to be “just what the doctor ordered.”

Care for chronic conditions
  • Healthcare professionals predict that by 2030, 6 out of every 10 Baby Boomers will be dealing with a chronic condition.
  • If you have a chronic condition, you must deal with it virtually all the time. Some days will be good, but the reality is that chronic conditions can flare up at any time, causing severe pain, discomfort, or a halt to normal daily activity.
  • If your doctor’s office requires that appointments be set up days or weeks in advance, this can make ongoing treatment difficult.
  • Urgent care centers are perfect for this scenario because a patient with chronic issues can walk in and be treated at a moment's notice.

Walk in clinic in Germantown, MD

Avoiding infection when your kids go back to school

Walk in clinic in Germantown, MD
Classrooms are communicable

Next month about this time, urgent care and immediate care clinics will see a spike in the number of school aged children with colds and flu symptoms. The beginning of the school year is the time when your children will make new friends and in the process, meet lots of new germs and bugs. Just watch a group of children playing together. You will notice that they are always in close contact with each other and they touch a lot of shared surfaces such as:
  • Doorknobs
  • Desktops
  • Toys
  • Pens and pencils
  • Food

Adjusting to new sleep patterns

The excitement and/or the dread of school can seriously affect sleep patterns and eating habits. Take a compromised immune system and add constant contact with a variety of germs and germ sources, you have a recipe for an illness that will usually go through the entire class before it runs out of steam. We want to offer you a few practical and affordable ideas that will make this year’s back-to-school season fun and healthy for everyone.

Proper sleep is crucial

As students get older, bedtime schedules are often more relaxed. Video games and electronic devices are guaranteed to make students stay awake late into the night. Studies have shown that teens need at least 10 hours of sleep a night, especially if they are involved in extracurricular activities and after school sports. Poor or insufficient sleep is the first step to a weakened immune system.

Urgent care sun safety tips for choosing sunscreen

Urgent Care in Germantown, MD
Hours of fun in the sun

Urgent care clinical staff will tell you that Damage from the sun is cumulative. Over the course of a person’s lifetime, 25 percent of their exposure to the sun occurs between birth and 18 years of age. Skin cancer is one of the few cancers that are almost entirely preventable; if we are aware and proactive.

Choosing the proper sunscreen
  • Block the sun’s damaging rays with the use of a sunscreen that has an SPF of at least 30
  • Use sunscreen that offers protection against both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Apply the sunscreen liberally; according to the American Academy of Dermatology, most people apply only half as much sunscreen as they should.
  • One ounce generally covers an adult sufficiently, and most children kids need about half of that.
  • For a measuring guideline, an ounce of sunscreen should fill the palm of your hand.

The key areas

In addition to the obvious spots such as the arms, legs, and face; be sure to apply a generous amount of sunscreen to the:
  • Ears
  • Neck
  • Backs of legs
  • Tops of feet
  • Hands

Keep in mind that lips can burn, too. Be sure to carry a lip balm that has an SPF of 15.

Urgent Care tips for making hydration a habit

Urgent Care in Germantown, MD
Keeping children hydrated

Urgent care doctors know that children are much more prone to dehydration than adults, yet it seems that the majority of hydration education is geared towards adults. The fact is that children’s bodies do not cool down as efficiently as adult’s bodies, and children are seriously at risk when the temperatures climb this time of the year. When fluids leave the body faster than they are being replaced, severe dehydration is the risk, and can even be a life threatening situation.

Make hydration a habit
  • The best way to keep your child hydrated is to make sure that they drink liquids regularly.
  • You should offer healthy beverages at every meal and with snacks.
  • If your child is involved in organized sports, add some extra hydration in his or her first meal of the day, but start then drinking even the night before.
  • Your child should drink the equivalent of a 16 ounce bottle of water about every 2 hours during their game.
  • Remember that during activity, your child can lose up to a half-liter of fluid per hour.
  • Get your kids to drink at least 5- 9 ounces of water or a sports drink every 20 minutes.

Urgent care fireworks tips for a safe Fourth of July

Urgent Care in Germantown, MD
Fun and fireworks safety

Urgent care clinics are bracing for the busiest day of the year for medical emergencies… the 4th of July. Even though backyard fireworks are illegal in Montgomery County, and the penalty for possessing them is a hefty fine, there are always a few residents who think it is worth the risk. Unfortunately, we will see a percentage of these individuals because they have been injured while handling fireworks. The safest and smartest way to enjoy fireworks is to go out and view one of the many public displays in the area. We would like to provide you with some quick tips for having a fun and safe 4th of July weekend.

1.       Only approved fireworks should be discharged.
2.       Remember that even if fireworks are legal in certain areas, they may be temporarily forbidden because of risk of wild fires.
3.       Never let young children handle or light fireworks.
4.       Sparklers are not as safe as you think; they can reach a temperature of 1800 degrees Fahrenheit.
5.       Only light fireworks that are placed on a stable and flat surface.
6.       Make sure that fireworks will discharge clear of any combustible materials, houses, and buildings.
7.       Never hold fireworks in your hand while lighting them.
8.       Keep a bucket of water and/or a hose ready as a precaution against fire.
9.       Never try to relight fireworks that failed to ignite.

Urgent care clinics recognize men’s health month

Urgent Care in Germantown, MD
Men’s Health and weight loss

Urgent care clinics join in the recognition of June as Men’s Health Month, and we think it is time to encourage men to make PREVENTION a PRIORITY. Men live shorter lives than their female counterparts, and astonishingly, many health conditions can be prevented or detected early with regular checkups and physical screening. Regular screenings should include:
  • Blood pressure
  • Cholesterol level
  • Blood glucose level
  • Prostate health

Most of these conditions can be reduced or improved just by losing excessive body weight? Perhaps you have been thinking about it for a while, or even have gone on several diets and workout regimens, but those extra pounds just seem to come right back. Consider automotive repair, it is nice to be able to fix your car, but sometimes you must depend upon a professional mechanic because you cannot do it yourself. It is the same with our health. Sometimes we can make the necessary changes ourselves, and sometimes we really need professional help. Drop by our walk-in clinic for a simple health screening, and consider the following tips to help you control weight.

Urgent care first aid tips for poison ivy

Urgent care in Germantown, MD
Urgent care for poison plants

Amongst the countless summer maladies that we experience, urgent care clinics see their fair share of patients who suffer from exposure to poison ivy or poison oak. These plants carry an oil that causes uncomfortable and painful reactions on the skin, and that the body finds particularly harmful. This substance gives the leaves of the plants a sheen that can appear oily or slick with moisture. It is vitally important that you wash your hands, arms, legs and face every time you think you may have been exposed to one of these poisonousplants. Not only can they affect the area of initial contact, if you happen to touch other areas of your body, you might be in a rough spot after a few days.

You can significantly reduce later symptoms by:
  • Immediately washing exposed skin with rubbing alcohol or a degreasing liquid.
  • Scrub under fingernails with a brush to remove any amounts of the oil that remain.
  • Over-the-counter cortisone cream can reduce swelling and itching.
  • Calamine lotion can reduce itching and also help to dry out broken skin and blisters.
  • Lotions and creams that contain aloe Vera can soothe itching, burning skin.

Urgent care: natural versus chemical insect repellents

Urgent care in Germantown, MD
The importance of insect repellents

In case you have not noticed, biting insects such as fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes are out in full force, sending record numbers of patients into urgent care centers. Symptoms of the mosquito-borne disease range from relatively minor skin irritations, to life-threatening brain inflammation. West Nile Virus can also leave survivors with long-term disabilities including chronic fatigue and even paralysis. This has led to concerns over the best possible insectrepellents. Not only with regard to their effectiveness, but also taking into consideration their possible health hazards.

Natural is not necessarily better

It is completely understandable that many patients associate “natural” products with better health. A great number of patients would rather use mosquitorepellents that are derived from “natural” products such as plant extracts. However, when it comes to mosquito repellents, there is clear evidence that natural repellents may not provide the best outcomes.

·         Field tests and studies have shown that the two most effective repellents are DEET and picaridin.
·         Studies have shown that “natural,” or botanical based repellents are substantially less effective against mosquitoes than DEET or Picaridin.
·         Products that contain citronella, lavender, peppermint and lemon grass oils are often promoted as “DEET-Free” alternatives.
·         Botanical-based repellents do provide effective protection against biting mosquitoes.
·         Botanicals need to be reapplied 3-4 times as often as the lowest dose DEET-based repellent in order to provide comparable protection.
·         Botanical repellents may work just fine for a short stay in the backyard, but not for hours of working in the garden or if you are hiking all day in the woods.
